La figura femminile ritratta nel dipinto può forse essere identificata con Elisabetta Carlotta di Lorena, figlia di Leopoldo Giuseppe e sorella di Elisabetta Teresa, terza moglie (1737) di Carlo Emanuele III. Il confronto con un ritratto di questa principessa conservato a Palazzo Reale (piano terreno, Appartamento di Madama Felicita, Camera ultima; cfr. scheda OA di Silvia Ghisotti, cat. n. 00201035, neg. n. 185639) sembra confermare questa identificazione e una probabile datazione dell'opera intorno al primo quarto del XVIII secolo, così come il dipinto conservato alla Palazzina di Caccia di Stupinigi (ma proveniente da Moncalieri) dove la giovane principessa è ritratta in atto di intrecciare un serto fiorito di simbologia amorosa (cfr. Ballaira E., Griseri A., Zeri F., Le stanze dei piccoli Principi, Torino 1995, pp. 13-14, tav. 18). Nell'inventario del 1911 è registrata la bolletta di carico del dipinto proveniente dal Palazzo Reale di Firenze, dove era inventariato con il n. 1269; nel 1966 risulta già collocato nella sala della colazione, dotato di "cornice in stile rococò riccamente intagliata e dorata", per la quale i confronti più stringenti rimandano alla coeva produzione romana (cfr. G. Lizzoni, Il mobile romano, Milano 1970, pp. 25-26, figg. XXXVII, XLIII).
