GALERIE DE CATACOMBE.(Cimetière de St-Cali.\te.) était r « arcosolium ». Ce mot se lit quelquefois clans lesinscriptions par exemple dans celle du diacre Sévère, àSt-Calixte : « Cubiculum duplex cum arcisoliis et luminare. » Élém. darchéol. chrét. L 128 ÉLÉMENTS DARCHÉOLOGIE CHRÉTIENNE. Le terme « arcosolium, arcisolium, arcusolium », est com-IDosé de « arcus », larc formé par la partie supérieure deces tombeaux ; et de « solium », qui désignait proprementces grandes baignoires en marbre dont plusieurs nous ont étéconservées. Les « arcosolia » ne sont pas dune haute anti-quité. Il semble que primitivement on se contentait degrandes niches dans lesquelles étaient placés des sarcophagesen marbre ou en terre cuite. Le vestibule du cimetière deDomitille renferme un « loculus » décoré de stucs représen-tant un sarcophage ; cest une disposition exceptionnelle.
