Français : Le 26 septembre 1852, Louis Napoléon Bonaparte est en visite à Marseille. Il en profite pour ordonner la construction d’une nouvelle cathédrale. Un jour noir pour la « vieille » Major : sa destruction totale est en effet immédiatement décidée pour faire de la place au nouveau monument qui devra être grandiose ! Ouais, ben s’était sans compter sur les Marseillais ! En 1853, les protestations de la Société française pour la conservation des monuments et la pression de l’opinion publique permettent de sauver le chœur et une travée de nef qui n’ont pas encore été démolis. Le clocher, hélas, et deux autres travées avaient déjà disparus sous les coups des démolisseurs… Je-m’en-foutisme extrême, elle faisait partie des 934 monuments historiques classés dans la liste établie en 1840 !
Déclassée en église paroissiale après la construction de la nouvelle cathédrale, elle reste affectée au culte jusque dans les années 1950. Fragilisée, elle est longtemps étayée par des madriers. Comme si ça ne suffisait pas, elle est ébranlée par les travaux alentours, notamment le percement du tunnel autoroutier de la Major (achevé en décembre 2002). L’étaiement intérieur (toujours en place en 2016) et extérieur (déposé en 2009) est entrepris en 1994… Occasion unique pour les archéologues de l’explorer.
