Pour Franz Marc, un des plus grands peintres expressionnistes allemands, la couleur est le vecteur d'une démarche spirituelle comme elle l'est pour Kandinsky, le cofondateur du mouvement artistique "Der Blaue Reiter" en 1911.

Inspirées par l'Orphisme de Robert Delaunay, les oeuvres de Franz Marc montrent un dynamisme similaire à celui qui anime les tableaux des futuristes italiens. Mais cet artiste préfère inclure dans ses toiles des animaux (chevaux,..) plutôt que des machines comme le font les artistes italiens. Mort à Verdun à 36 ans, le style de Franz Marc n'a pas eu le temps d'évoluer vers l'abstraction totale. L'exposition du musée de l'Orangerie raconte son parcours et son amitié artistique avec un autre peintre allemand, plus jeune mais tout aussi doué August Macke, mort également sur les champs de bataille.
