Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The complex of Ali Paşa of Çorlu holds (somewhere in the cemetery) a rather grueling item: the head of the founder, brought to Istanbul after it was severed from his body in 1711 on the island of Mytilene on the orders of Ahmet III. He had been son-in-law of Ahmet II and Grand-Vezir of Ahmet III. The complex where at least his head rests (my source, Strolling through Istanbul, does not refer to the body) belongs to a transitional period between classical and baroque styles. The guidebook states “The only very obvious baroque features are the capitals of the columns of the porch”. I was mainly struck by the crowds who gather in the other buildings (than the mosque) for tea, coffee, water pipes and to maybe buy some of the many carpets and similar souvenirs sold here.
