The Çırağan Palace was built on the order of Sultan Abdülaziz in 1871. In 1910 it was partially destroyed by fire. It was later renovated in 1986 and has been used as a hotel since. Behind the palace is the site of the Şeref Stadium, where many Turkish and international football matches took place, until the İnönü Stadium opened in 1947. A row of great plane trees were cut down during the construction of the Şeref Stadium.
