Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Series: Portraits of Hindu Princes and Chiefs

School/style: Mughal Style

Made in: India

`Abd Allah Khan II hawking; single-page painting mounted on a detached album folio. `Abd Allah Khan II mounted on a brown horse with dog and attendant, attendant holding falcon with hawking glove on his right hand; sparse landscape composed of soft, pastel colours, including a pink foreground and rocky outcrops shaded with green, and large tree sprouting in grassy meadow against a clouded but deep blue sky. Framed by thin red border, lined with a repeated motif of serrated leaves; margin decorated with repeated red tulip motif outlined in gold; entire folio bordered by thin, green adhesive strip. Folio belongs to a series of single-page paintings and drawings of Indian rulers, all of which were once attached to the leaves of the album 1920,0917,0.13, also housed in the British Museum collection. Ink, opaque watercolour and gold on paper.

This posthumous portrait idealises the Uzbek ruler, who was actually reported to be enormously fat. The painting belongs to a series of paintings once contained in an album comprising drawings and paintings of Indian rulers. At some point, the works were removed from the album (which is still preserved in the collection) and stored separately as detached folios. For information about the album, see 1920.0917,0.13; and for information about its (now detached) folios, see individual records 1920,0917,0.13.1-43.
