Description

Standbeeld is in 1967 gemaakt door Han Wezelaar.

Floor Wibaut, geboren in 1859 in Middelburg, kwam in 1904 als vermogend man naar Amsterdam. In 1907 werd hij lid van de gemeenteraad. Hij was wethouder van 1914 tot 1927 en van 1929 tot 1931 en bracht als zodanig veel tot stand, onder andere op het gebied van de volkshuisvesting ('Wie bouwt? Wibaut!'). Zijn grote inzet en invloed in de Amsterdamse gemeentepolitiek in het interbellum brachten hem zijn bijnamen 'de Machtige' en 'Onderkoning van Amsterdam'. Hij stierf in 1936.

Rhijnspoorplein is sinds 2009 de standplaats van het beeld. I.v.m. de aanleg van de Amstel Campus is het beeld tijdelijk verplaatst.
