xed and forced into the cut to keep out the cold. It had set like cement, but by dint of patient working I graduallyremoved it, much to the objection of the inter-ested onlookers. Doing what I could duringthe few days that I stopped, I was able at lastto leave him, promising on the third day toreturn and see him. They promised me theywould not interfere in any way with my dress-ings. The third morning I rode out; it was snow-ing, but I wanted to keep my word. I reachedthe tent, tied up my horse, and before any onewas aware of it I had pushed aside the tentcloth and entered. What did I see.? Thenative doctor at the head of my patient put-ting on a plaster made of donkeys manureand cows urine ! I stood and looked ; no onespoke. MR. FORDER WHEN SITTING WITH THE ARABS In Arab tents or houses chairs are practically unknown. With their legs folded underthem, the natives rest quite comfortably, whilst the large cloak covers any appearanceof awkwardness by sitting in such a position. The loose flowing garments ol the Orientalsare very suitable for such an attitude of repose. IN COMPETITION WITH NATIVE DOCTORS 85 mejedies, about four and a half dollars, for hissupposed cure. I pretended to make for myhorse to leave them, but they begged me to stayand do something; all the lint, bandages, andointment I had left had been burned by thequacks orders, so I could do little but againcleanse the cut of the filth of the past two days.Three times they served me thus, but in thelong run I won, and the fellow got aboutagain. The ride through the snow-storm im-pressed them, made because I would not breakmy promise to be with them on the third morn-ing. The recovery of the young chief was at-tributed to my careful and wise treat
