Summary

[edit]
Description
English: 'Take Off' Stone, Mortimer Road, near Strines Inn This stone dates from the 1770s when Mortimer Road was first constructed as a Toll Road. The 'Take Off' relates to additional horses attached to heavily laden carts to help pull them up the steep hills. At this point the extra horses were unhitched and taken back down the hill to await the next load. Strines Inn was one of the original Coaching Houses built on the road. Strines Reservoir can (just) be seen in the background. For a closer look, see ...986004 A second 'Take Off' stone is also situated on Mortimer Road, some 20 miles north, nearer to Penistone ... see ... 1813527 1813512
