Rhode Island resident Mike Cohea captured timelapse footage of pink supermoon rising over the Pell Bridge in Newport (RI), from his vantage point in nearby Saunderstown on April 7, 2020. Describing it as the 'biggest and brightest moon of the year', Cohea told Storyful that as people drove past the supermoon rising, 'they hit the brakes and puled over to watch'. A NASA explainer on supermoon events notes that they occur when the moon is at its closest proximity to earth, making it slightly brighter and larger than a regular moon. A BBC report notes that pink supermoons derive their name, not from the color of the moon itself but rather from the fact that it is a northern Native American reference to an ear-blooming wildflower first seen across North America as spring begins.
