Description |
English: 'On the Canton River' [Guangzhou, China] No. 30 of 51 (PAJ2051 - PAJ2101): inscribed by the artist on the album page, as title, with the date '1/69'. This evening view on the Pearl River running up to Canton may show the pagoda on Whampoa [Huangpu] island which was a well-known seamark for Indiamen and later Western shipping which anchored there. The vessel on the left is a naval cutter, probably British, though the flags are not entirely clear, with junks to the left. |
