Description

De naam 'Miljoenenlijntje' is ontleend aan de hoge aanlegkosten van dit spoorlijntje tussen Schin op Geul en Kerkrade. Eén miljoen gulden (ongeveer € 455.000) per kilometer. In vergelijking met de miljarden euro's kostende Betuwespoorlijn en de hogesnelheidsspoorlijn naar Parijs een schijntje, maar begin negentiende eeuw was het een enorm bedrag. De aanleg begon in 1925.

Oplopende bouwkosten De bouwkosten liepen zo hoog op omdat er nogal wat tunnels, bruggen en duikers gebouwd moesten worden. Bovendien moesten alle bouwwerken extra stevig worden gemaakt in verband met mogelijke verzakkingen door de plaatselijke mijnbouw. Ook moesten enorme hoeveelheden grond worden verplaatst om hoogteverschillen te overbruggen.

Op het originele traject van het Miljoenenlijntje, Valkenburg - Kerkrade - Heerlen, rijdt al sinds 1988 geen NS trein meer. Maar gelukkig is het in onbruik geraakte spoorlijntje in ere hersteld en rijdt er regelmatig een (stoom)trein van de Zuid-Limburgse Stoomtrein Maatschappij (ZLSM).
