Summary

[edit]
Description 'Gazelle' at the National Railway Museum. Despite its somewhat bizarre appearance, this engine is not a toy, but a real, working steam locomotive. It was built as a 2-2-2 Well tank in 1893 for a contractor, but passed to the Shropshire and Montgomery Railway in 1911, who rebuilt it as a 0-4-2WT. It survived there until nationalisation when, incredibly, it passed into the ownership of British Railways, Western Region - its very prestigious number being 1. As soon as the Chief Mechanical Engineer saw it, in horror he ordered it withdrawn immediately!
