Title
'Duck head' ewer spout
Description
English: Cast copper alloy ewer or laver spout of late Medieval date, probably dating from the 15-16th centuries. The spout is shaped in the form of a duck’s head. Many ewer spouts are in the form of dog’s heads such as the example recovered from Cardiff Castle (Lewis 1991, 4, fig. 8A), although duck head spouts have been recorded. The duck eyes are defined by an incised circular ring, the bill is open with a protruding short barrel emerging from the animal’s mouth. The top of the animal’s head is decorated with short incised lines at the centre and above the brows.
