Description Dutch School, 17th Century. A previously unpublished illustration of a dodo specimen (it is unknown whether it was live or stuffed) with inscription 'Dronte' was sold at Christie's for £44,450. Traces of black chalk, watercolour, gum arabic, brown wash framing lines 10¼ x 8 3/8 in. 26 x 21 cm. The inscription on this drawing, 'Dronte', was the Dutch 17th-century name for the dodo, although at this period it was also used in a number of other languages including French and Italian.
