Description'1 Lotus flower in a pond'.jpg |
Nelumbo nucifera, known by numerous common names including Indian lotus, sacred lotus, bean of India, or simply lotus, is one of two species of aquatic plant in the family Nelumbonaceae. In the classical written and oral literature of many Asian cultures the lotus is present in figurative form, representing elegance, beauty, perfection, purity and grace particularly in difficult circumstances (muddy pond). In Sanskrit the word lotus (padma पद्म) has many synonyms, such as ambuja (ambu= water + ja=born of), neeraj (neera=water + ja= born of), pankaj, pankaja, kamal, kamala, kunala, aravind, arvind, nalin, nalini etc. Lotus has cultural and religious symbolism, is found in temples, stupas, and with deities. It is national flower in several countries; it is of symbolic value in India, Nepal and Sri Lanka, as well as in many other countries influenced by Indian culture in ancient times, such as like Thailand, Cambodia, Viet Nam, Indonesia and Laos. |
