? =! A UNIQUE DIFFICULTY 277 Charlie Townsend) made a hit for which we ranthree. As I got back to the w^icket the ball, whichwas being thrown in, bounced into my shirt andlodged there. Townsend and I ran three more,I carrying the ball with me inside my shirt. Thedifficulty which arose was unique, and there wasno precedent to guide our procedure. Obviouslywe could not go on running for ever. But howwere the Surrey men to get the ball ? If theystopped me they were breaking the rule whichforbids fieldsmen to impede the batsmen ; if Itook it out of my shirt, I should have been outfor touching the ball before it was dead. How-ever, Jupp and Southerton got hold of me andasked me to give them the ball. I, however,laughingly declined, but invited Jupp to take itout, w^hich was done. I dont think the incidenthas ever repeated itself—certainly not in first-class cricket. Of course it would be impossiblefor such an incident to happen now, as a new ruledecrees that the ball is dead if it lodges
