unty of 1893, finding her position assailedby Surrey, fought desperately hard for the laurels,but the Southern county brought the honoursback to the South of the Thames once more. Itwas a neck-and-neck race for points between thetwo counties, but Surrey, by thirteen victories,two defeats, and one tie, had a points advantageover Yorkshire, who won twelve, lost two, anddrew one out of their fifteen engagements.Yorkshire had ill-luck, as on their form theyshould have beaten Kent, if rain had not led tothe abandonment of the match, and they wererobbed of victory over Somerset by the sameenemy of cricket. Surrey owed a vast deal to Brockwell, whosebatting was at once brilliant and consistent, andto the bowling of Richardson (by now the bestfast bowler in England), who during this seasoncaptured 120 wickets at an average of 11.38 runs,in Surrey matches. Mr. John Shuter, to the regret of all who knewhow devotedly he had served the county, resignedhis captaincy, and was succeeded by Mr. K. J.
