Description

"The Rock of Chickamauga Memorial"” is a granite boulder taken from the 1863 Civil War battlefield in Georgia, hauled to Chicago, and dedicated in 1894. It was re-dedicated in 1994.

The Memorial honors Union General George Henry Thomas, who held the field at Chickamauga during most of the second day of the battle on September 19, 1863, saving the Union army from annihilation and earning him his most famous nickname, "The Rock of Chickamauga".

In December 1864 in front of Nashville (TN), General Thomas commanded the Union forces that destroyed the Confederate Army of Tennessee as an effective fighting force, earning him a second but less well-known nickname, "The Sledge of Nashville".

Born in Virginia in 1816, Thomas like many Southern-born officers in the regular U.S. Army in 1861 was torn between loyalty to their states and loyalty to their country. He struggled with the decision, but ultimately opted to remain loyal to the United States. His Northern-born wife probably helped influence his decision. In response, his family in Virginia turned his picture against the wall, destroyed his letters, and never spoke to him again.

Thomas is buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Troy (NY).

The spelling on the Memorial is "The Rock of Chicamauga".
