| Description |
English: Record heat in the Florida Keys has led to bathtub-like ocean water temperatures. The heat has caused coral bleaching at levels never measured before. Bleaching occurs when water temperatures reach the 90’s for an extended period of time forcing coral to expel algae which it needs for needs for food.
These images of coral bleaching were taken yesterday at a coral nursery near Tavernier, Florida. Scientists and volunteers are working around the clock in an attempt to save the coral. Some of the coral has been taken to deeper (cooler) water and other corals are being removed to temperature controlled laboratories. In spite of all the coral loss coral specialists like Gabrielle Rosenbacher with Reef Renewal USA remain steadfast in their commitment to restore the Keys coral reefs. “In many ways what we are seeing now with coral bleaching is like attending a funeral. Death often brings people together. Together we can fight though this and move forward with even greater resolve”. |
