Summary
[edit]Description"The Countess" at Dolarddyn crossing - geograph.org.uk - 1020067.jpg |
English: "The Countess" at Dolarddyn crossing Seen with Dolarddyn Farm in the background. There are no gates on this crossing. The train stops and blows its whistle, a guard jumps down with a red flag and stands in the road to halt any traffic while the train drives across the road. Service varies through the year, generally operating on weekends from April to October, and on weekdays during school holidays and through the summer months. See website for details http://www.wllr.org.uk/timetable.htm
The Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway http://www.wllr.org.uk/ was opened in 1903, possibly under a Light Railway Order, running both freight and passenger services, but was never really financially viable. It was a local company and initially it was run by the Cambrian Railway on behalf of the local directors. When the Cambrian system was absorbed by the GWR in 1922, one of their first acts was to start a bus service in competition with the trains, and in 1931 the passenger services ended. Freight services continued through nationalisation in 1948, and were ended in 1956. The current railway results from a major struggle by volunteers to bring it to its current success. |
