Description

As the EPA diver in the center prepares to collect a sediment grab sample, his dive buddy gives him the universal "ok" sign to go ahead.

Here, divers were sampling an underwater Superfund cap to help determine if the cleanup measures were working. At the Pacific Sound Resources site, EPA divers took sediment samples as well as placed and retrieved solid phase microextraction devices which absorb site contaminants over a period of time. After they are collected from the bottom, they are sectioned at the lab to determine what, if any contaminants, benthic life would be exposed to and whether or not additional work might be necessary.
