Description

Las Erebias (con cien especies) son un género de mariposas presentes en la península Ibérica como resultado de las glaciaciones del Pleistoceno (entre -2 ma y -12000 a). Cuando se retiraron los hielos, estas mariposas, típicas de hábitats de tundra, quedaron relegadas a los macizos montañosos. Por eso actualmente sólo se encuentran en altitudes superiores a los aproximadamente 1000 metros


Con un color marron muy oscuro que absorben mejor la luz solar , con sus cuerpos cubiertos de pelos para evitar la pérdida de calor, su la larva es la que sobrevive al invierno, sin embargo la crisálida, es de una fase muy rápida. Su vuelo es bajo, sobre las praderas o matorrales, para evitar los vientos de montaña. Erebia palarica es la erebia de mayor tamaño del mundo.
