Summary

[edit]
Description
English: As seen in May 2020: the National Register of Historic Places-eligible commercial building at 1128 Main Street (corner Summer Street) in Buffalo, New York has a quite unusual design: the rough-textured and ponderous appearance of the brick-faced structure, the quintet of round-arched windows on the upper floor underneath the front gable, and the rusticated stone belt courses stretching horizontally between floors on the Main Street façade are all hallmarks of the Romanesque style, while the two-story turret with bell-shaped cast metal roof above the corner entrance is decidedly not. The building's date of construction has been variously estimated as c. 1870 (per the Building Inventory Form filed with the NYS Department of Parks and Recreation, Division for Historic Preservation in 1979) and c. 1885 (its Resource Eligibility Evaluation dated 1987), and has been home of the Main Food Market since at least the earlier of those two documents.
