Il est démantelé en 1935 pour construire un nouveau bâtiment "le Palais de Chaillot" (architectes Jacques Carlu, Louis-Hippolyte Boileau et Léon Azéma) destiné à l'Exposiiton Universelle de 1937. Les Archives de la Planète, vaste entreprise imaginée par Albert Kahn, banquier, mécène utopiste et pacifiste, poursuivait l'ambition « d'établir un dossier de l'humanité prise en pleine vie », à un moment charnière de son histoire, à « l'heure critique » de changements aussi profonds qu'inéluctables pour reprendre les mots mêmes du géographe Jean Bruhnes, directeur scientifique du projet.
