Description
English: A French re-enactor salutes during the French and American national anthems to honor members of the “Filthy 13”, a company of the 101st Airborne Division during World War II, near Carentan, France, June 2, 2024. “Filthy 13” was the name given to the 1st Demolition Section of the Regimental Headquarters Company of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. The 1st Demolition Section was assigned and trained as demolition saboteurs to destroy enemy targets behind enemy lines. During the Normandy Invasion of Europe in June 1944 they were ordered to secure or destroy the bridges over the Douve River. Although around half were killed, wounded, or captured on the jump, those who remained were able to accomplish their mission. Commemorative events such as these serve to honor the sacrifices U.S. service members made 80 years ago in securing peace and security, and inspiring future generations to value a collective vision of global peace.
