English: Fallingwater is a weekend home which Frank Lloyd Wright designed for Edgar Kaufmann Sr. Wright designed the house in 1934-1935, and it was built in 1936-1939. It was built over a 30 ft (9 m) waterfall on Bear Run, a stream that feeds into the Youghioheny River. It is about 50 miles (80 km) southeast of Pittsburgh. The closest town is Ohiopyle, Pennsylvania.
This photo shows the classic view of the house, with the waterfall under the cantilevered deck. Frank Lloyd Wright has been called the leading American architect of the 20th century. Fallingwater is his most famous creation. Fallingwater, lilke many buildings which he designed, had several technical defects. The cantilever decks sagged, the roof leaked, and there was a strong tendency to mildew. The house is now owned by a foundation, which has corrected these problems at great cost. Kaufmann was the owner of Kaufmann's Department Store, the leading department store in Pittsburgh in the 1930s and 1940s. |
