| Description |
English: As seen in October 2021, the meaning of the "Choice of 25" ghost sign on the south side of the building at 153 Delaware Avenue has been baffling modern-day residents of Buffalo, New York ever since it was uncovered in the mid-2000s when an ongoing renovation saw blue paint stripped off the exterior brick. Built in 1865 as the residence of jeweler Hiram Hotchkiss, the building had been converted for use as a restaurant by the 1930s, and from 1946 through '65 was the home of The Chateau, an Italian eatery with a famously expansive menu that advertised a "Choice of 25 Full-Course Dinners". An even more interesting piece of the building's history came immediately after the Chateau's closure, when it operated as The Roundtable, which was part-owned by shipping magnate George Steinbrenner; it was here in 1973 where he first announced his purchase of the New York Yankees baseball team. |
