Summary

[edit]
Description
English: "Charity" (at the John Houldsworth Mausoleum). This marble figure is one of three that are located in or near the John Houldsworth Mausoleum in the Glasgow Necropolis (see 665351 for a view of the mausoleum as a whole). They represent three traditional Christian virtues: Faith, Hope, and Charity. Charity, seen here, is shown holding a child. [Ray McKenzie, "Sculpture in Glasgow - an illustrated handbook"] The mausoleum, a portion of which can be seen in the background, was commissioned in 1854 by John Houldsworth (1807-59) for his family, who were prominent in the cotton business. John Houldsworth later became the last Provost of Anderston. The mausoleum was carved by John Thomas, who also created these statues. [Ronnie Scott, "Death by design - the true story of the Glasgow Necropolis", pp90-91]
