[edit]Is it possible to identify some of the people/places/objects shown in the captions under each image? They would likely be more useful than the generic captions given now. Like the comedy fest photos, the two men on the couch, who are they? Oaktree b (talk) 04:06, 30 December 2012 (UTC)
- That seems reasonable - and I think every effort should be made to improve the descriptions. In some cases that information simply may not be available anymore (even more reason for this to be done with new photos moving forward ASAP before that info is lost) or the resources simply do not exist within the organization to go into much more detail - in which case hopefully Wikimedians can help them out. --Varnent (talk)(COI) 06:42, 30 December 2012 (UTC)
- Hi Oaktree b, in the case of the image of mine you changed, I took it during Pride in London. I uploaded them very quickly (half of them were during the event, the other half was later on the same day). It'd be really great if we could encourage people from LGBT organisations and groups to go through and improve descriptions and tags from things like Pride photos. —Tom Morris (talk) 15:07, 30 December 2012 (UTC)
- Hey Tom Morris, no problem. I'm not in an LGBT organization, just like to help out on here (Wikipedia) where I can. Thanks for the upload! Oaktree b (talk) 17:12, 12 January 2013 (UTC)
In this area, you may find the templates {{Personality rights}} and {{Consent}} useful additional notices, particularly the latter in the form {{consent|appearspublic}} which makes sense for a public march or demonstration where there is no expectation of privacy but the photographs might be surprising (such as with partial nudity or outrageous costumes). Note that identifying groups (such as Stonewall) or well known figures, such as Sir Ian Maclellan or Mayor Boris Johnson, in photographs or videos is not going to be controversial, however at LGBT events non-"celebrities" might be surprised to find their photographs labelled with their full name if they have not been asked first. It is probably wise to check with the subject or photographer if you are unsure. Thanks --Fæ (talk) 17:52, 12 January 2013 (UTC)
Status as a WikiProject?
[edit]Curious what thoughts folks may have on using this as a LGBT Commons WikiProject. I do not think any real changes would need to be made beyond wording on the homepage acknowledging this purpose. My general thinking is that in reality, it serves a very similar purpose to what a LGBT Commons WikiProject would do - only this happens to include a broader base of outside entities. Thoughts? --Varnent (talk)(COI) 20:10, 13 January 2013 (UTC)
- I am not sure that WikiProjects conceptually work that well on Commons, so this is a bit of suck it and see.
- We would be lucky if the space gets enough traffic to be a sustained noticeboard/help desk. There are some specific questions that a long running noticeboard would create useful guidance for - such as:
- how to apply Photographs of identifiable people in a respectful way for all types of LGBT+ people
- how best to title and correctly describe images of transgendered, inter-sex and people who do not want their gender or sexuality identified
- what level of detail to identify or locate people in countries where their sexual orientation might be a crime
- where to go to ask for help in removing information and photographs for LGBT subjects
- how best to handle sexual photographs and when these fall outside of policy
- where to ask for help if a contributor appears to be deliberately abusive or offensive to LGBT subjects
- oddities to expect and how to stay mellow when there are so many international viewpoints on Commons
- how best to handle images of self-identified LGBT people who may be minors in their home country
- I suspect that if a few LGBT interested users hang around long enough offering help, then other noticeboards and discussions will start to point users to this project for relevant answers. --Fæ (talk) 20:49, 13 January 2013 (UTC)
- Fair enough - I'll post some links around and we'll see what happens. :) --Varnent (talk)(COI) 20:51, 13 January 2013 (UTC)
Interested in joining this project
[edit]I'm interested in signing up to the LGBT Free Media Collective on behalf of the LGBT UK History Project - http://www.lgbthistoryuk.org/wiki (a mediawiki-based project with Creative Commons licensing) - but unsure what category we would come under. I've uploaded a few images to Wikimedia Commons, but would be interested in uploading some more, particularly if they could be clearly grouped in a category recognising they come from our project. Suggestions, please. Ross Burgess (talk) 21:41, 13 May 2013 (UTC)
- Hi Ross, you are a member because you want to be. Welcome . I'm a trustee of the Wikimedia UK Chapter and part of the Wikimedia LGBT group. For a long time the UK chapter has been vaguely talking about an event specifically focused on LGBT matters, and as the only openly gay member on the Board, I'm guilty of not making it happen for real. In the past I have been on the periphery of the HCA now housed by the LSE and the collection at the Bishopsgate Institute. Considering your background with the material, perhaps we could coordinate a friendly workshop hosted by one of these institutions aimed at giving an introduction to editing and uploading, and at the same time encouraging more experienced Wikimedians to make better use of the gay archives available around London, and improve Commons and Wikipedia articles on LGBT history? I have a busy time over the next month or so, but a summer event (close to Pride?) might be a possibility. You can email me, or follow-up on my user talk page.
- As for Commons uploads, one possibility is to create a "credit template" that will give a nice standard attribution to the source and can be included on the uploads you make, and give them a common category so you can keep tabs on it. For example, this credit template is one that I cooperated on developing for the National Library of Wales and has been used in a batch upload. If you live handy for London (I am an easy trip to London Bridge, or the Chapter office at Old Street), I would be happy to meet up and bounce around some ideas, or failing that try and connect on Skype for a chat at some point. Hopefully as well as gaining nice uploads, we might find ways of ensuring they get well used in the various language Wikipedias. Cheers --Fæ (talk) 22:08, 13 May 2013 (UTC)
- So it is LONG overdue - but I have finally added UK History to the templates - and also updated the templates so adding future projects will be slightly easier. You can use source=ukhistory in any of the templates for this project to show the link and logo for the project. Enjoy! --Varnent (talk)(COI) 01:59, 16 October 2013 (UTC)
I have included the LGBT Free Media Collective as an interwiki collaboration at meta:Wikimedia LGBT. I invite project members here to come expand the Wikimedia Commons section to provide details about (and goals of) this project. I very much hope that our groups can work together and support each others' efforts in the future. --Another Believer (talk) 23:28, 5 November 2013 (UTC)
- It was birthed by Wikimedia LGBT (along with WikiQueer and Equality Michigan) - so I personally also hope they remain closely tied together. :) I suspect the others that have helped with this would agree - although I obviously cannot speak for them. --Varnent (talk)(COI) 05:14, 6 November 2013 (UTC)
Files already on wikimedia commons to add to LGBT collective
[edit]I have made a number of images available on wikimedia commons for LGBT purposes from our website archive http://www.gayhistorycornwall.com However we placed most of our LGBT archive on pinterest https://uk.pinterest.com/LGBTCornwall/part-1-cornwall-lgbt-history-archive-malcolm-lidbu/ https://uk.pinterest.com/LGBTCornwall/part-2-cornwall-lgbt-history-archive-malcolm-lidbu/ https://uk.pinterest.com/LGBTCornwall/gay-art-sculpture-lgbt-history-project-2016-cornwa/
I remain unclear as to how to add those we have contributed to wikimedia commons from the wikimedia commons category 'Malcolm Lidbury' to the LGBT collective wiki.
I recently added a considerable number of photographs of sculptures I personally sculpted for our LGBT history exhibition 2016 http://www.swfed.org.uk/news/cornwall-lgbt-history-art-sculpture-studio-exhibition-2016/ of historic reputed or known same-sex figures for the creative commons usage of other art, history & LGBT projects.
Not being an academic sometimes I just don't get how to contribute to wiki
Adding organisations and logos
[edit]I've added Equality Michigan and the UK LGBT Archive to this page, being the other two organisations that have contributed media. Ross Burgess (talk) 17:46, 11 February 2016 (UTC)
