Resolved problems
[edit]Internal server error
[edit]All accesses to http://stable.ts.wikimedia.org/poty/vote now throw a 500 error:
- Server Error
- This server has encountered an internal error which prevents it from fulfilling your request. The most likely cause is a misconfiguration. Please ask the administrator to look for messages in the server's error log.
Any chance that this will be fixed before voting's over for the first round? (On a side note, what time zone is used for determining when voting's over, anyway?) -- Schnee 21:39, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
- OK, it seems to be working again now. -- Schnee 22:34, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
- Great! For your information anyway, the considered time is UTC. Patrícia msg 23:28, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
Unable to select voting category
[edit]When I click the link from my email to vote, a page opens welcoming me to the competition and telling me select the category I want to vote in. However, there is nothing below this message. I would love to pick a category, but I can't. (: 65.161.73.245 00:31, 18 January 2008 (UTC)
- Hi, voting for Round 1 has now closed (closed 00:00 18-01-2008 UTC). Sorry we didn't have a sensible message to tell you that!!
- However voting in the final opens on the 20th January, so if you wait a couple of days you can still take part.
- thanks, pfctdayelise (说什么?) 00:55, 18 January 2008 (UTC)
Ouch, that's too bad! Do I use the same voting token? 65.161.73.245 01:00, 18 January 2008 (UTC)
- Um... to be honest I'm not too sure. When voting opens you can try it and see. :)
- We will be sending out a reminder email to everyone who requested a token for Round 1, once the final opens. pfctdayelise (说什么?) 05:21, 18 January 2008 (UTC)
Well, I just used my token to try and vote in the finals (or is it over already??) and I get the same thing: select a category, and an empty list :( What a shame this is so complicated. Any chance I can still vote? --WiseWoman 09:01, 25 January 2008 (UTC)
- It's over already, sorry for that. -- Bryan (talk to me) 12:27, 25 January 2008 (UTC)
You appear to have not yet requested a token.
[edit]After following the emailed token link and clicking on the "Final (28) (not voted)" link I get:
- "You appear to have not yet requested a token. Please follow the instructions on the voting page to obtain one.
- If this is an error, please send a mail to commons-poty@" [redacted]
I was able to vote in round 1 after the Unhandled Exception Commons talk:Picture of the Year/2007/Voting#Unhandled Exception was fixed.
I've emailed this to commons-poty@ also. -- Jeandré, 2008-01-20t07:12z

Olá Jonas Tomazini, bem-vindo(a) à competição Imagem do Ano 2007 do Wikimedia Commons!

Só que as categorias para votação não ficam disponíveis. Jonas Tomazini >>> Diga lá! 23:48, 19 January 2008 (UTC)
- Oi Jonas, você tentou votar antes do dia 20 ;). Tente novamente com a nova permissão que deverá receber ou deverá ter recebido entretanto - deve aparecer apenas a categoria "Final" quando tentar votar. Patrícia msg 15:26, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
User not able to vote
[edit]I was unable to vote in the first round, despite your kind assistance and more than an hour of trying. I am now again unable to vote in the final round, despite enabling and confirming e-mail. Clicking the voting link gives me a message saying it seems I have not enabled e-mail. This is a continuation of a known technical problem that has continued unresolved since the first round. Fg2 02:00, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
- Maybe you can e-mail someone your vote privately instead of using the software? --Boricuæddie 02:31, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Boricuaeddie, and thanks for the suggestion. Through the kind assistance of Brianna, I have been able to vote. That would have been a good way to handle matters if I had continued to be unable to vote. Best regards, Fg2 08:41, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
Wording for final needs tweaking
[edit]After voting in the final, the user gets the message "Please also vote in the other categories", which is confusing because of course there aren't any. Can that be removed? --MichaelMaggs 09:53, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
- Has been done. (Except in Japanese and Chinese... My editor suddenly lost their fonts :s...) -- Bryan (talk to me) 12:48, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
Unhandled exception
[edit]I requested a token, and after visiting the link, I got a "welcome to the contest" page from which there was just one category - "Final" - to choose from - after clicking the link all I got was:
Unhandled Exception
An unhandled exception was thrown by the application.
Could someone fix it?
Best regards, Blueshade 18:36, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
- I received the same message. Couldn't vote for final. --Jcart1534 18:38, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
- Same here. 217.208.68.132 18:43, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
- Fixed. -- Bryan (talk to me) 19:28, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
Opinions on Image:Catrinas 2.jpg?
[edit]Hi all, I've found this image, Image:Catrinas 2.jpg which, BTW, is a featured picture and is being used in more than seventy wikipedias. The problem with the image is that its description states that it's a "Picture taken at the Museo de la Ciudad, Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico... a public place", that is, it has been taken inside a museum. However, according to COM:FOP Mexico "Literary and artistic works already published may be used, provided that normal commercialization of the work is not affected, without auhorization from the copyrightholder and without remuneration, invariably citing the source and without altering the work, only in the following cases... VII. Reproduction, communication, and distribution by means of drawings, paintings, photographs, and audiovisual means of works visible from public places." I don't think that the inner of a museum can be described as a place "visible from public places". As it's a featured image and candidate to picture of the year, I didn't want to start a regular deletion request (although I'm definitely sure about its license being wrong). Do you have any suggestion on how to proceed? Should I open a regular deletion request? Should it be solved here? In other place? Best regards and many thanks in advance --Ecemaml talk to me/habla conmigo 22:11, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
I have an opinion... If you are definitely sure about it´s license being wrong, it is your duty, as administrator, in order to guard the interests of Wikipedia and within the scope of your responsibilities and obligations, to start a Deletion Request. Regards.--Tomascastelazo 03:08, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
- True... Nothing we can do about it. File a deletion request. I also doubt its copyright status. Luckily the chance that this one will be closed before the end of the competition is zero ;) -- Bryan (talk to me) 11:09, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
Unable to vote
[edit]I have a problem. I voted in the first round and received the automatic email notifying about voting in the finals. However, when I click the link, the page tells me: "You appear to have not yet requested a token. Please follow the instructions on the voting page to obtain one." So, I requested a new token, got the new email ok, but the new link takes me to the same notification. Help, please! JmT 23:59, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
- This problem may be caused by stale cookies. To delete the relevant cookies follow the following link:
- Then try requesting a new token. If this still doesn't work please email commons-poty@googlegroups.com with your username and project, and we will email you a right link. pfctdayelise (说什么?) 00:37, 22 January 2008 (UTC)
- Thank you, thank you! Deleting the cookies did the trick and the new token worked just fine. JmT 10:52, 22 January 2008 (UTC)
Known problems: unresolved
[edit]Translation in french
[edit]When I asked the token, I received a message saying that I had voted (I clearly had not voted yet). I think it is simply a wrong translation rather than wrong message being send.
Merci d’avoir voté pour Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year 2007. Vous recevrez par mail des informations supplémentaires à l’adresse que vous avez configuré dans votre compte (vérifiez la page Special :Preferences si vous n’êtes pas sûr). Other than that, GREAT voting system ! congrats Anthere 21:07, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
- Yeah that's a wrong translation. It should say "Thank you for applying to vote in..." or something. I'm not sure how to say that in French? -- Bryan (talk to me) 21:21, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
- I will ask Pinpin about the translation. pfctdayelise (说什么?) 01:15, 18 January 2008 (UTC)
Server Error
[edit]Hello. I tried to get a voting token and I filled the needed info (my wiki and user name, and I already enabled Email from other users), but I got the message:
“Server Error This server has encountered an internal error which prevents it from fulfilling your request. The most likely cause is a misconfiguration. Please ask the administrator to look for messages in the server's error log.”
What's the problem? --Matija 18:53, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
- There were some internal problems with the database. Please try again and let us know whether it works. -- Bryan (talk to me) 19:27, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
Link in the email didn't work
[edit]I was sent the email telling me that I could vote in the finals, but when I clicked the link, the page didn't load. It was just blank. Can I try again? Regards, —Celestianpower háblame 21:48, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
- Sent you a new one. Please check whether that one works. -- Bryan (talk to me) 21:57, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
- I tried it, and it didn't work again, unfortunately. However, after a restart, I clicked the link and the page loaded, but it said I was all out of tokens. So, I'm sorry to be a pain, but would you mind sending me another token, one last time? Pretty please? Thanks and kind regards, —Celestianpower háblame 22:17, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
- Contacted per email. -- Bryan (talk to me) 22:23, 20 January 2008 (UTC)

Did anybody bother to check all Featured Pics were included in vote?
[edit]Did anyone cross check that all 2007 FP were still listed in Category:Featured pictures or where-ever the list was taken from? Image:Lava wildfire.JPG has been promoted to FP Commons:Featured picture candidates/Image:Pāhoehoe Lava flow.JPG, Oct07, but didn't have a FP tag on it, looks to me that it missed out on voting. Are there others? --Tony Wills 01:18, 23 January 2008 (UTC)
- Er, isn't the FP from that nomination Image:Pāhoehoe Lava flow.JPG ? And that one was in Commons:Picture of the Year/2007/Galleries/Nature views. I don't see how Image:Lava wildfire.JPG is a FP? (It was apparently an en.wp FP but that's beside the point...) --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 01:28, 23 January 2008 (UTC)
I created the initial list using the monthly listings and then compared with the images that have a FP tag since 2007. There were some missing on the listings that had a tag on them. That's all the checking I have done, I'm not sure what I could have checked more without reading through all FPC archived. -- Bryan (talk to me) 12:51, 23 January 2008 (UTC)
- :-{ Ahh, sorry :-), yes the Pāhoehoe Lava flow.JPG FPC discussion had a link to the Lava wildfire.JPG, image. I had followed the link from Lava wildfire.JPG back to the FPC discussion which I saw had resulted in a promotion and didn't notice it was a discussion about a different version :-). Sorry for impugning the integrity of the checking process (yes Bryan's check sounds reasonably robust :-). (Tony slinks away to hide his embarrassed face :-) --Tony Wills 00:14, 24 January 2008 (UTC)
- You had me worried there :)
- I initially went through the chronological FPC records and found there were quite a few noms that didn't end up being archived properly. So Bryan's method was a good double check. pfctdayelise (说什么?) 07:26, 24 January 2008 (UTC)
Suggestions sought for similar contest
[edit]Please see my post at Commons:Village pump#New contest similar to Commons:Picture of the Year. Thanks!--Pharos (talk) 23:53, 6 November 2008 (UTC)
