Wiki Loves Onam 2024 campaign is an initiative that aims to capture and celebrate the essence of the vibrant and festive spirit of Onam in Wikimedia projects. The campaign in Wikimedia commons is a public photo campaign in which contributors can click the pictures related to Onam celebration and upload them to Wikimedia Commons.
  • What is the scope of this project?
The photography campaign in Wikimedia commons aims to capture and document information ranges from the historical significance of the festival, encourages participants to capture high-quality images of various aspects of Onam celebrations in different regions on categories, such as, but not limited to, Onam festivals, activities and traditions related to Onam, dance and games, Onam dishes, rituals and ceremonies, flowers etc.
  • I am not a Keralite / Malayali. Can I participate in this campaign?
Absolutely! You do not need to be a Keralite, or even located in Kerala. We encourage people from all over the world to join us in documenting the vibrant culture, traditions, and celebrations of Onam. Whether you are in Kerala or celebrating Onam elsewhere, feel free to capture and share your photos on Wikimedia Commons. Your contributions will help enrich the documentation of this wonderful festival on the platform.
  • Can I upload photos of Onam celebrations held outside Kerala?

  • How many pictures can I upload?
The participants can upload as many pictures related to Onam. Don't worry, we are a large repository and we have space for all your capatures. And also we have a special prize for highest number of in-scope images uploads by an individual worth INR 3,000 plus swags and certificates
  • Can I submit images of any size, and are there any specific requirements?
Yes, you can submit images of any size. However, to be eligible for consideration for the prize, images must be larger than 2 MB and must not contain any watermarks or embedded signatures. This requirement helps ensure high-quality images that can be used in Wikipedia and its sister projects. Images that do not meet these criteria are welcome for submission but will not be considered for the prize.
  • What are the basic rules for this campaign?

  • What if my photo lacks full EXIF information?
EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) information contains important details about a photo, such as the camera settings, date and time of capture, and location. While full EXIF information is not always mandatory for submitting photos to this campaign, it can be helpful in verifying the authenticity and originality of the images.
If your photo lacks full EXIF information, it may still be accepted for submission, but it might affect eligibility for certain aspects of the campaign, such as specific categories or prizes that require verification of photo details. To ensure the best chance of your photo being considered for all prizes and categories, try to include full EXIF data when possible.
  • Can I get a timeline of the event?
This year the competition will happen from 1 September, 2024 to 30 September, 2024. The jury team will evaluate the photographs from 1 October, 2024 to 14 October, 2024 and declare the results by 15 October, 2024 (tentative date).
  • What happens to my photos after the campaign ends?
After the campaign ends, your photos will remain on Wikimedia Commons and continue to be available for use in Wikimedia projects, such as Wikipedia, Wikivoyage, Wikidata and others. They may also be used by people worldwide, provided they comply with the licensing terms. Your contributions will help preserve the cultural heritage of Onam for future generations
