Info Himeji Castle, UNESCO World Heritage Site Ref. Number 661, is a hilltop Japanese castle complex located in Himeji, in Hyōgo Prefecture. The castle is regarded as the finest surviving example of prototypical Japanese castle architecture, comprising a network of 83 buildings with advanced defensive systems from the feudal period. Oppose Too much unspectacular foreground. --Uoaei1 (talk) 14:35, 18 December 2016 (UTC)
Comment Uoaei1, of course I absolutely respect your opposing voice, just to explain why I like this picture. To me it hints at the sheer magnitute of Japanese castles. Central keeps, sometimes unfortunately also called donjons (wrong in the Japanese context), are important - and certainly also the most popular and iconic - elements of Edo period fortifications but make up just a tiny part of these. I've also uploaded an image of Himeji's keep. --Martin Falbisoner (talk) 16:17, 18 December 2016 (UTC)
- Donjon is en:tenshu in this case. --Laitche (talk) 16:27, 18 December 2016 (UTC)
Oppose Per Uoaei1. lNeverCry 21:21, 18 December 2016 (UTC)
Comment - For what it's worth, I think that having the moat in the foreground frames the photo very well. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 22:20, 18 December 2016 (UTC)
Comment The moat, walls and all that are really what a fortified castle is all about, without them it becomes just a pretty house. This place was built for war and a real documentation of the castle should include them. In this "power photo", the moat and wall work very well as a foundation for this 'castle in the clouds'. cart-Talk 12:46, 19 December 2016 (UTC)
- I feel tempted to add: What is seen here is just a wall, not even the wall. Himeji castle was - and still is - huge, cf. this old image. --Martin Falbisoner (talk) 15:03, 19 December 2016 (UTC)

Neutral The tree and its shadow on the left ruin this for me. Fantastic image otherwise. I would support a crop. Thennicke (talk) 11:36, 22 December 2016 (UTC)
Comment - For what it's worth, I like the tree and its shadow and feel that the composition needs both it and the amount of space it has to the left of the buildings, so I would oppose a crop that eliminates the tree in question. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 16:07, 22 December 2016 (UTC)
- @Ikan Kekek: Fair enough, that's just a difference in taste. I personally don't like the borders of the image to contain distracting elements unless they're symmetrical, as in the case of framing -- Thennicke (talk) 06:17, 23 December 2016 (UTC)
