User:MediaWiki Update Bot (bot AND admin flags)
This is a bot I intend to run to update messages in the MediaWiki: namespace. It needs the bot flag to avoid flooding RC, and it needs the admin flag to edit MediaWiki: pages. It won't use any other admin tools or edit any other namespaces.
The reason is because I plan to update Special:Upload to include several 'versions' of the form, using uselang=XX hacks. See User:Pfctdayelise/SpecialUpload redesign for details. I need to use the bot to minimise disruption for existing languages. For English it will be ok; when you do uselang=foobar, when the messages don't exist, it falls back to the English default. But for other languages this would be massively disruptive.
So, for example, MediaWiki:Mytalk/de is the message you see that links to your talk page in the top right hand corner, if you have your preferences set to German. If German users implement the 'versions' of the form, they will be making links like uselang=DEownwork, DEfromflickr. The problem is for the messages they don't define (such as MediaWiki:Mytalk/DEownwork), they will fall through to English instead of German. See: Talk. So my bot will put {{MediaWiki:Mytalk/de}} on them.
Hope this makes sense. Basically it is necessary so that we can update the English menu without simultaneously updating 200+ languages, and without making the interface really ugly for all non-English languages. --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 11:44, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

- Support, I trust you with this, you wouldn't do something without making sure it won't harm the site. Feel free to ask me for French translations. le Korrigan →bla 12:53, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

- Tentative support... is there any way to test run this? Skimming this it sounds like not? But trust you, based on your many positive contributions to the project, to get this to work correctly and to fix things if anything goes awry. ++Lar: t/c 19:10, 20 February 2007 (UTC)
- I could run the code through my pfctdayelise account? But then it will flood RC. which is precisely my reason for a bot flag... pfctdayelise (说什么?) 01:46, 21 February 2007 (UTC)
- Maybe I'm confused about the scope, is this really a one time deal? Is there a way to run it just for one language or whatever as a test? Flooding recent changes one time isn't that bad. Anyway, I really don't think a test run is necessarily necessary... I trust you. It just would be nifty. Still Support. ++Lar: t/c 11:40, 21 February 2007 (UTC)
