Herbythyme for checkuser

Vote

I realize there's a bunch of nominations to consider, but i would like to nominate Herbythyme (talk · contributions · Move log · block log · uploads · Abuse filter log for checkuser rights on commons. Herby is a dedicated RC patroller and vandalism/spam/puppet fighter, and as such he's likely to be among the first to see any patterns developing that suggest multiple accounts might be in mischievious use, and checkuser is the best tool we have for gathering further evidence to back up these suspicions (seeing the patterns is the best technique, but Herby is already quite adept in that).

Herby already has the checkuser tools on en.Wikibooks (as do I), where he has used them quite effectively to identify duplicate accounts used for disruptive purposes. Having a good group of active checkusers is all to the benefit of any project, since it's better for this tool to be used discretely. If it comes up a negative, then it's better for the feelings of all if the account that was checked wasn't listed somewhere as "needing to be checked", since this serves to do nothing but raise tensions and suspicions. Having the tool in the hands of our most active RC patrollers allows the gates to be kept, while at the same time avoiding unnecessary embarassment of finger-pointing. Having the tool in the hands of more than just one or two also allows proper investigations for unblock requests as well, in case the person who ran the first CU isn't around to explain. --SB_Johnny|talk|books 12:07, 26 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Acceptance - I am happy to accept this nom. This should not muddy the waters for the others now - I see Greg has the required votes and can therefore get the rights and both the others are well on the way, if in doubt please vote for Yann and/or Lar rather than me though.
If I were to get the rights we would then have just four active checkusers, not at all unreasonable for Commons. I am aware I am a new admin here who still has much to learn. However my track record in fighting vandals (& spammers) goes back a bit (feel free to look at my contributions and logs on Wikibooks, as well as here). By keeping some of the junk out, those more experienced than me can spend their time more productively. I have been given and use CU rights on Books and I assure you I would use them here - there have been at least three occasions in the past two weeks when I would have used them to try and help the community. I am a "front line" RC watcher, the vast majority of the time I use the rights on Books because of something I see on logs - that is how I would use them here and if I am not sure I consult - Johnny can confirm that.
In passing I have quite strong views on admin inactivity and I assure you that I would request withdrawal of all my rights if I was inactive any appreciable amount of time. I am in a different timezone to some of those seeking these rights which might help round the clock coverage.
Thanks Johnny for the nomination and my thanks to all of you who vote --Herby talk thyme 12:12, 26 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
