How should we fix this?

[edit]

This category (along with its subcategories) was discussed extensively at Commons:Categories for discussion/2009/12/Category:Regions of Spain. There seems to be a consensus that regions is misleading: the generic category is Category:Subdivisions of Spain, and virtually everything here is actually a comarca. (See w:Comarcas of Spain if all this is new to you.) "Regions" is a particularly poor choice, since a región in Spain is almost always a larger unit such as an autonomous community. (I suppose Bierzo could be called either a comarca or a región, but I can't think of another example.)

My proposal would be to change everything here from regions to comarcas and then sort out the few errors afterward. (If there are any obvious exceptions, I'd be glad to hear about them.) Adding a definition at the top of each page in relevant languages would be good. Beyond that, I'd suggest the following refinements, but I think these are lesser issues.

  1. Distinguish mancomunidades and any other similar terms where those are more precise than comarcas.
  2. Spell this as comarques in the categories for Catalonia, Valencia, and the Balearics (I'm open to sticking with comarcas even there, but I think the Catalan/Valencian plural would be preferable in Catalan-speaking regions).

Agree for comarcas and comarques. But there will be these 2 categories with slightly different names in Category:Subdivisions of Spain, I would prefer only one (comarcas), with a translation in catalan inside. Jack ma (talk) 07:00, 11 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
There is only a "loose" consensus from non Spanish users, no single Spanish support or real knowledge about regional subdivisions, regions, the formal four language related and administrative complexities. I would suggest to read en:Comarca carefully (The comarca is known in Aragonese as redolada, in Galician as bisbarra, and in Basque, in particular in the province of Álava / Araba, as eskualdeak or arabako eskualdeak) as to understand that Comarca has not only a different names in each part of Spain but equally a quite different meaning. --Foroa (talk) 13:46, 13 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yup. I'm pretty aware of that, but I'm not sure if the use of these terms which, unlike comarca, have absolutely not passed into English is a good idea. But in any case, comarca is more accurate than region in all cases. As I said, I have no problem with further refining category names later.
We don't hesitate to use "county" more-or-less throughout the U.S., even though its meaning is quite different in different states, and to modify it to "parish" for Louisiana. I think this is a parallel case. Again, region is dead wrong, because virtually none of these are what the Spanish call a región. I'm going for it, we can always rename some of these categories again. - Jmabel ! talk 06:35, 14 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've added Catalan, Galician, and Aragonese to the category page (although I believe that comarca is a common enough word in both Galician and Aragonese, and is pluralized exactly as in Spanish, I could be wrong). I don't know enough Basque grammar even to translate the phrase "Comarcas of Spain" into Basque; if someone can, that would be good. - Jmabel ! talk 01:59, 15 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The word "comarca" is not used in the Basque Country. It's not an official land division. Moreover, we don't use it in basque, nor in spanish. I think that Wikimedia Commons should use the word "region".--Unai Fdz. de Betoño (talk) 08:57, 15 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Don't you use eskualdeak with the same or similar meaning? On the Basque Wikipedia, I see eu:Kategoria:Euskal Herriko eskualdeak and its subcategories. We can certainly rename the categories that refer to Basque provinces to use that term. (Again, I'm at a large disadvantage here, because Basque is the one language commonly used in Spain that I cannot read.) As I've said above, the problem with region is, for example, the use of región or región histórica before the transition to democracy to refer to such entities as Catalonia, Castilla la Vieja, the Basque Country, etc. and even (to a lesser extent) the use of región since then to refer to some of the autonomous communities. - Jmabel ! talk 17:40, 15 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Basque language is not only spoken in Southern Basque Country (officialy, Spain); it's also spoken in Northern Basque Country (officially, France). As you told, Category:Eskualdeak of the Basque Country is not a bad one, I guess (it would be under Category:Comarcas of Spain and Category:Regions of France. What do you think about it?--Unai Fdz. de Betoño (talk) 11:49, 17 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Seems reasonable to me. That's exactly analogous to how I handled Category:Comarques of Catalonia.
Tell me if this looks correct:

I agree with your proposal, Jmabel. In the last one (in France), I think Category:Eskualdeak of the Basque Country can be under Category:Regions of France, just like Category:Comarques of Catalonia, don't you think?--Unai Fdz. de Betoño (talk) 20:40, 17 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I discover you had a discussion already. I came here to present how I resolved the parent Category:Eskualdeak of the Basque Country taking account of 7 Basque provinces distributed over 3 french provinces and 2 spanish autonomeous communities, the dichotomies being made at lower cat-levels, nnot at the parent Basque cat-level. I hope you can agree with that. --Havang(nl) (talk) 21:18, 14 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
