Name of the island

NOTE: French people cannot prounouce the 'h' and therefore talk about 'Fatu -iva', 'Ta-iti' and so on

English: The real name of this island is Fatu Iva, without the "H". The locals pronounce [fatuiva]. The orthography Fatu Hiva was made by contamination from the two main Marquesas islands: Nuku Hiva and Hiva Oa.

The word Hiva is usually translated by beam (and could mean originally far) ; The word Iva mean the number nine or the ordinal ninth.

Français : Le véritable nom de l'île est Fatu Iva, sans le "H". Ses habitants prononcent [fatuiva]. L'orthographe Fatu Hiva est apparue par contamination du nom des deux îles principales des Marquises : Nuku Hiva et Hiva Oa.

Le mot Hiva est habituellement traduit par poutre (mais pouvait signifier originellement loin) ; le mot Iva correspond au chiffre neuf ou à l'ordinal neuvième.
