[edit]

These are not bicycles by Leonardo da Vinci. The word should not be in the plural. Leonardo did not make these bicycles (presuming that it is in fact "bicycles" plural and not just one bicycle photographed three times.

If the page is going to exist at all, it needs to say "Bicycle" singular.

Secondly, to attribute the bicycle to Leonardo in any way is extreme foolishness. The page on which the drawing is found has a number of sketches by a later hand. There is a funny little face of a person in a hat which looks as if it has been drawn by a child, or at the very least, by an adult with no drawing skills whatsoever. The drawing of the bicycle is equally clumsy and is obviously by the same hand. Both are presumably several hundred years later, and done by a child who held Leonardo in no awe whatsoever. To this kid, it was just a page to draw on.

Such things are remarkably common. One of the oldest needlework samplers in this country has crude, irregular childish tacking over the top of the beautiful embroidery. I own a 19th century illustrated book in which a child has drawn (in black ink) poo-poos dropping from all the animials. How such a badly-drawn object could convince anyone that it is Leonardo is totally beyond my conjecture.

However, if this page is going to stay, then it needs renaming and made clear that this is not "by Leonardo" but "from a drawing" on a page from Leonardo's notes.

See also de:Fahrrad (Zeichnung). It is a fake which was attributed to da Vinci. --Saibo (Δ) 16:57, 6 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
