Quotation from historical text by Fernão Lopes (c. 1385 – after 1459), the Portuguese chronicler appointed by King Edward of Portugal who wrote the history of Portugal. Text see: Chronica del Rey D. Ioam I de Boa Memoria, Segunda Parte, Chapter 92, Lisboa, 1644, p.220[1]. Memorial tablet erected 1 November 1960 by the local council commemorating the meeting on 1 November 1386, recorded by Fernão Lopes, of King John I of Portugal and John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, on the bridge over the River Mouro at Monção, Portugal. In the following year (1387) King John I of Portugal married Philippa of Lancaster, the eldest child of John of Gaunt.
