The Deutsche Nothilfe (or only Nothilfe) was a social charity organization in Germany in the time 1923 – 1945. The Nothilfe was established in autumn 1923 and was probably the continuation of the “Deutsches Volksopfer” which was founded during the "Ruhr-riots" of 1923 as local emergency collection for needy persons affected by the events. Initially was the Nothilfe a private emergency collection movement on local basis, later it was changed to a national self-contained "Foundation under public law" in order to have a total control about the collected moneys. The "Deutsche Nothilfe" was permitted to sale postal charity stamps with surcharge for own's benefit. During the Nazi-time merged the "Deutsche Nothilfe" completely with the Nationalsozialistische Volkswohlfahrt and ever since 1936 took over the Winterhilfswerk the annual, state-controlled emergency collections. As national socialist organization was the NSV outlawed finally by the Act No. 2 of the Allied Control Authority for the Allied Occupated Zones of Germany (Kontrollratsgesetz Nr. 2) from 10 October 1945 and their assets confiscated.

One can see in the Deutsche Nothilfe one of the predecessor organizations of the modern social state in Germany.

The “Nothilfe”-stamps of the Deutsche Reichspost are not to confuse with the stamp issues with surcharge for the "Winterhilfswerk des Deutschen Volkes" or other charity organisations in Germany.
