Coat of arms of "Old Bavaria" (Altbayern) (the "Blue Panther"): Argent, a panther rampant azure armed or ; forming the 3rd quarter of the Greater coat of arms of the Free State of Bavaria, adopted in 1950, designed by w:Eduard Ege in 1946
Originally the "Blue Panther" was "depicted in the coat of arms of the Count Palatine of Ortenburg, in Lower Bavaria, in the 12th century. Later, it was adopted by the House of Wittelsbach. Today, the blue panther represents the old Bavarian administrative districts of w:Lower Bavaria and w:Upper Bavaria".(sources: www.bayern.de [1]; Scheufele, Karl Michael, Coat of Arms and Flags, published by Bavarian State Chancery[2]). Also the coat of arms of the City of w:Ingolstadt (see: Category:Coats of arms of Ingolstadt), the capital of the Duchy of Bavaria-Ingolstadt between 1392 and 1447 and one of five ducal residences of medieval Bavaria (besides w:Landshut, w:Munich, w:Straubing and Burghausen)
