In 1871, sections of New Orleans experienced flooding. The cause was a Mississippi River levee breach at Bonnet Carre which chaneled river water into Lake Pontchartrain; while Lake Pontchartrain was swolen with this unusually high water level a second levee, the Hagen Avenue Levee protecting the New Orleans from the Lake, failed, resulting in the flooding in the city.
