My images[edit]

Hey I saw you nominated my pictures for deletion, I just wanted to see what I need to do or what licenses I need to add to make it valid. Thanks for your understanding. Baseball Watcher (talk) 02:02, 1 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

QZ8501_flight_path.png[edit]

Hello, thanks for a very useful image Image:QZ8501 flight path.png. The image says "AirAsia flight" whereas the flight was operated by Indonesia AirAsia which is a different airline from AirAsia. Would you mind correcting it? Regards, kashmiri 12:45, 28 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Leaked radar sighting in Image:QZ8501 flight path.png[edit]

Firstly, I want to thank you for one of the best maps I've ever seen in Wikipedia.

You recently plotted a data point marked "'Leaked' radar sighting; 36200ft (11000m), underspeed" just south of the last radar contact. What is this? Why "underspeed"? What is the source of your information?

The only reference to your data point that I can find in the article is the "secondary radar image" in the Response section. But the caption specifies 36,300 feet or 11,100 meters. It this what you meant? So far as I can tell, that image is not referenced anywhere in the text of the current article. In addition, the image may be deleted for improper fair use of copyright (see here).

--RoyGoldsmith (talk) 12:13, 2 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it was a reference to the leaked radar image. Thank you for highlighting the error in the altitude(!!) and the compliment (I've had a lot of practice learning to make maps recently for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 article, like the flight path and especially this search areas map). Since there is not much space on the image to fully explain what that point is, I decided that "'Leaked' radar sighting" was the best way to be succinct while emphasizing that it is not something that has been publicly released by officials. I have not seen any news (including a web search as I write this response) where officials have refuted the image. The text of the article has been changed hundreds of times and it appears that it no longer mentions the radar image (I'll change that soon), but it has been discussed by many in the media, with aviation experts all noting that the 353 knots speed that is shown in the image is too slow (to maintain lift...which would cause a stall). According to CNN:
"A screen grab purportedly leaked by an Indonesian air traffic controller appears to show that Flight 8501 was rising in altitude but was losing speed at a velocity that was too slow to sustain flight...The data taken from the screen grab comes from an Indonesian pilot who was given the screen grab anonymously by an air traffic controller who had been tracking the flight"
In this article, an aviation expert says the 353kn speed is "approximately 100 knots too slow." I don't know why the image would not be an acceptable use of 'fair use'. AHeneen (talk) 14:56, 2 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The image comes directly from a Twitter post, which is not normally considered a reliable source. Other sources (CNN, IB Times, Aviation Herald) do not show the image. Since the article text was deleted / never existed, the upload fails the fair-use test by the first rationale and especially the fourth which says "Non-free content must be a work which has been published or publicly displayed outside Wikipedia by (or with permission from) the copyright holder...". The owner is the Indonesian Transportation Ministry which did not publish or display the image. The image was stolen (technically) by the air traffic controller, who did not have permission to publish.
In a larger context, we at Wikipedia do not, in general, publish rumors, innuendos or stolen material. Interest in this theory peaked about last Monday and has not seen much play since then. If reliable news sources considered this to be a valid hypothesis as to the cause of the crash, it seems to me that we would be hearing a lot more about this theory. By the 10 year test, all mention of this idea (including the radar image and the data point on your map) should be eliminated from Wikipedia as an idea once considered valid but no more, unless and until reliable sources give it substantially more coverage. In my opinion, of course. --RoyGoldsmith (talk) 23:42, 2 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2015 is open![edit]

You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2015 Picture of the Year contest.

Dear AHeneen,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2015 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the tenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2015) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1322 candidate images. There are 56 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category. In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.

Please, correct the distance from Penang to MEKAR waypoint on both your maps![edit]

The real distance from Penang Is. (Penang airport to be certain) to waypoint MEKAR is 237 nmi (439 km; 273 mi). If one add another 10 nmi then the place there Malaysian military radar (Penang/Butterworth) lose the sight of MH370 will be 247 nmi (458.0 km; 284 mi) northwest of Penang airpor. Not 200 nmi (370 km) as it written on both your maps: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malaysia_Airlines_Flight_370#/media/File:MH370_flight_path_with_English_labels.png https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malaysia_Airlines_Flight_370#/media/File:MH370_initial_search_Southeast_Asia.svg

Here is the proof from SkyVector (https://ibb.co/kD9iWF) - you can try to measure the distance yourself as well. KOT-TOK (talk) 21:27, 21 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
