Category talk:Ships with the same name
What to include[edit]
There are two or three different practices going on right now. Either, to keep the "same name" categories only for ships that have the exact same name, ie.:
Possibly also including numbers:
- Category:Ships named Fairplay would have Fairplay-21 (tugboat, 1997) and Fairplay-22 (tugboat, 1998).
The other practice is to include all ship names that has one word of that name, ie.:
- Category:Ships named Mars has Mars (ship, 1981) and Mars (tugboat, 2000), but also includes N. Mars (ship, 2004) and Team Mars (ship, 1982).
Today there have also been made several categories in the style of Category:Ships named after Ulsan that were included in the parent category Ships with the same name.
I prefer the first of these, possibly also the second. As far as I'm concerned, the main purpose of these categories is to keep track of ships with the exact same name, to make it easier to navigate between them and find the correct category when we are adding ships to categories. More or less as an alternative to disambiguation pages. Including all aspects of a name, like all ships with London in the name, may be useful to a degree, but it will make these "same name" categories more messy and less obvious. - @Blue Elf: Can you give any examples of "more messy and less obvious"? I could see a Trekkie or Trekker coming upon a category for the Starship Enterprise who would be pleased as punch to know that the US Navy and NASA also have ships named Enterprise in part. — Jeff G. ツ 14:12, 19 September 2017 (UTC)
- OK, maybe that sounded worse than I intended it to. It just makes more sense to me to keep these categories only for those exact names. It's fine if you and others disagree. Blue Elf (talk) 14:16, 19 September 2017 (UTC)
